Should I Get Microneedling or Microdermabrasion?

Trying to decide between microneedling or microdermabrasion? Both are great options so it can be a hard choice to make. Learning about the differences can be helpful in deciding which one would be best for you.

Types of Skin

One of the biggest differences is that microneedling is safe and effective for all skin types, whereas microdermabrasion isn’t advisable for all skin types, although it works for most.

Technique

Microneedling works it’s magic with a pen-like device that has a needle-filled head that punctures the top layers of the skin in order to promote the skin’s natural healing process of producing collagen. When the skin heals, the result is a more even skin tone as well as enhanced skin appearance. Microneedling is more beneficial as it is able to more deeply target skin issues resulting in beautiful skin and complexion.

On the other hand, microdermabrasion works it’s magic by exfoliating the skin with a mechanical device and a rough substance on the tip (example: sodium bicarbonate crystals) that removes unwanted skin cells that are either dull or dead on the skin’s surface. While this treatment only reaches the surface of the skin, the removal of the problematic skin cells results in smoother and fresher skin.

Recovery & Results Time

The downtime for both of these procedures is virtually none. After microneedling, your skin may need a few days to get back to usual as the skin can be a little sensitive from the procedure. Even though this may be the case, this would not impede any regular daily activities. The only thing to note is that you should keep your face clear of any product or make up so as to let the skin breathe a bit and heal (except for any moisturizing the aesthetician may do after the procedure).

For microneedling it may take some time before you see the full results. This is because the process of stimulating collagen to create the desired result of better skin, takes time. More than one session may be needed to reach full desired results, but it depends on the skin issue.

Microdermabrasion procedures yield results almost immediately, but you most likely will need follow up sessions to continue to see the results since the process only removes the top layer of skin.

Although microdermabrasion’s results can be seen almost immediately, the results of microneedling last longer as the procedure is more effective. Another thing to consider is that the results that you would receive from microneedling are not only the same as microdermabrasion, but even more so as the benefits of the former are wider-ranging.

Your skin care team at Aesthetica in Northern Virginia can help you decide which procedure would be best for you based on your particular skin issues as well as the desired results. Both treatments can enhance your skin in positive ways. Beautiful, younger, and more vibrant skin is only a treatment away.
