Cosmetic procedures and plastic surgery are no longer just for women. Over the past several years, the industry has seen an upward trend in men receiving treatments. In a competitive job market, many employers value youth and energy. As men age they experience many of the same setbacks as women: under eye bags, stubborn weight around the middle that no amount of exercise will get rid of, the appearance of jowls, the list goes on. Men are finding that getting some work done boosts their confidence and gives them more energy. What does male plastic surgery look like? Is it different from what females typically get?
What Cosmetic Procedures Are For Men?
Good news: if you’re a man looking to get a bit of work done, everything that is available for women is available to you. Liposuction, facelifts, Botox, tummy tucks, and even breast reductions can also be performed on men, but with some slight modifications.
Liposuction And Body Contouring
The ideal male physique is a trim waist and broad shoulders. Many men put on weight in their stomach and “love handles” as well as their chest and neck areas, particularly as they age and the metabolism slows down. Because men maintain skin elasticity longer than women, liposuction can provide excellent results. Men with excess and loose hanging skin may also opt to have a skin removal. This happens often when there is a chest reduction or a lot of hanging skin on the abdomen due to weight loss. For a non-surgical option, CoolSculpting is excellent for reducing waist lines. It works by freezing fat cells which are them eliminated from the body.
It is also possible to fill out muscle using implants. Some men want more abdominal definition or larger pectoral muscles. Calf implants are also a common procedure used to fill out the lower leg and give it a more muscular appearance.
Facial Procedures
As men age, they lose volume in their mid-face region which causes hollowed out cheeks. Facial skin also starts to droop which creates jowls along the jawline. This combined with a wrinkled neck ages the face. A facelift and necklift can fix this and create a more youthful appearance. A board-certified physician will evaluate the face and neck region prior to the surgery. This evaluation will take into account your current hairline and facial hair in order to assess how to get the best results.
Many men get chemical peels or dermabrasion to remove the outer layer of skin. This can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and sunspots.
Facial implants and surgeries are also common among men. Eyelid surgery, nose surgery and facial implants are all available to men, but it is important to discuss with your doctor what look you are going for.
Because men have a richer blood supply to their face than women, it is more likely that any facial procedures will bleed more and that you will experience a temporary hematoma (collection of blood under the skin). Another thing to consider prior to surgery is any scarring that may occur is more difficult for men to hide with make up or accessories.
Hair Growth And Implants
Probably the most common procedure among men is hair implants and transplants. Balding is an issue for many men that can begin as early as the late teens/early twenties. With hair implant surgeries, men will want to consider the amount of recovery time and multiple surgeries that will be needed in order to get natural looking hair. A full regimen of hair implants can last from 18 months to 2 years in some cases.
Another procedure is PRP Therapy (Platelet Rich Plasma). This involves using plasma taken from your own blood, which is then injected into the hair line. These injections encourage hair growth.
