Who remembers the “Rachel” hairdo? “The Rachel” made its debut on Friends in 1994, and fans loved it so much they raced to their hair stylist with pictures of Rachel Green determined to have the same shaggy cut.

Of course, celebrity obsessions are not a new thing – maybe there were women copying Cleopatra’s eyeliner back in Ancient Egypt! What has changed is our access to celebrity photos and lifestyles. The last 20 years have seen the advent of social media, and the growth in popularity of plastic surgery and non-invasive procedures has meant that surgeons are seeing more people asking to have the same nose as Meghan Markle or the lips of Scarlett Johansson, among others.

What Is It About Celebrities?

When we flick through Instagram and see celebrities lounging by the pool in their tiny bikinis or showing us their ‘just woke up from the best dream’ face, don’t be fooled into thinking these are spur of the moment shots. They have probably been curated by a brand expert, involve extra lighting and subtle make-up that covers imperfections but makes them look totally natural.

Celebrities make money off their looks so they have to present the best they can be. We view them and think we want a piece of that glamor, without thinking about the hours it took to make them look that perfect, the tape needed to perk their breasts or the clever contouring that gives them cheekbones that pop.

Who has the perfect nose? Kate Middleton according to math. Scientists claim having a slightly upturned nose and an angle at the nasal tip of 106 degrees is the perfect shape.

Is It A Good Idea To Look Like A Celebrity?

Just because you want a certain body part to look like your favourite celebrity doesn’t mean it is going to look as good on you. If you have a strong jawline and larger face, a petite button nose could look very strange. If you are a woman of smaller build, a huge J-Lo butt could cause stares for the wrong reasons.

It is important to remember that the celebrity body part can be used as a suggestion for changes. “Having an idea of how you want to look when you come in for a consultation is very useful,” says Dr Chang. “We can work with you using the 3-D Vectra imaging system to show you how the end result will be. You may find you prefer something completely different to the celebrity look.”

Feeling Good About Looking Like You

Wanting to look like Kim Kardashian or Natalie Portman will not give you automatic entry into the glamorous, exotic world they live. It can lead to obsession, debt, and depression as people strive to make more extreme changes to themselves. What a great surgeon will do is help create the best version of yourself without changing you so fundamentally that your family and friends don’t recognize you anymore. If you have been flat chested your entire life, get a breast augmentation that fits your lifestyle and makes you feel great about yourself. Hate your larger than life nose? Choose a shape that enhances your facial features and looks like it has been there all along. These are the changes that will ultimately decide how fabulous you feel about yourself after.

When Regular People Go Too Far

There are some well known cautionary tales out there. Many that involve Bieber lookalikes and others who think Barbie and Ken are the epitome of gorgeousness. They spend so much time, money and energy looking like their idols, yet some have become a living caricature and the person they were is lost under the fillers and enhancements. You really don’t want to find yourself on TV shows that highlight the horrors of your plastic surgery. After a consultation with a plastic surgeon, take some time to consider exactly how the surgery will change your life and be really sure that you do want that celebrity look.

Thinking Sensibly

As mentioned earlier, use the celebrity as an inspiration but take time to talk over what you want with your plastic surgeon. What do you want to see when you look in the mirror? Is it yourself or a doppelganger of a famous person? Dr. Chang has many years experience with breast augmentation, rhinoplasty and eye-lid surgery. He can advise you on what will and won’t work. Most importantly, he will work with you to ensure you are happy with your results. Who needs the jawline of Keira Knightley when you can have the perfect jawline of you! That has to beat looking like a celebrity.
