Since breast augmentations are an art and a science, there are many different ways we customize results and use our aesthetic skills to assure that our patients receive the most natural-looking breast implants possible.

From the implant material to the surgical techniques used, each patient receives a customized plan based on their ideal body and their goals. When it comes to technique, breast implant placement is one of the number one factors that determines the visual outcome of your procedure. To learn how we, here at Aesthetica, use breast implant placement to provide you with natural-looking breasts, continue reading!

What Makes a Breast Implant Look Natural?

Since breast augmentation is both an art and a science, it takes multiple factors to assure you receive the most natural results possible. First and foremost, a skilled surgeon with an eye for aesthetics will guide your procedure towards natural results. Secondly, the material of your implant will affect the look and feel of your breasts. Thirdly, the placement of these implants also affects how natural your breasts appear. And finally, proper recovery and ample rest will help your body recover as smoothly as possible. Today, we’ll be focusing on how important breast implant placement for natural-looking breast augmentations.

How Does Breast Implant Placement Affect a Natural Look?

While it seems self-explanatory where your breast implants should be (your chest area, of course), there is a lot more nuance your surgeon considers when creating a breast augmentation plan for you. There are multiple layers of the breast area – there is the skin, breast tissue, pectoralis muscles, and finally, the ribs. Depending on your surgeon’s technique and your breast implant material, your implants may go in under or over the muscle.

Silicone vs Saline Implants: Which Provides a More Natural Look?

Before we dig deeper into how breast implant placement affects the appearance of your results, let’s review the difference between silicone and saline implants. While both are very popular and can provide very natural results, it is worth considering which implant material would best suit your goals.

Silicone implants are medical devices pre-filled with silicone gel. They are generally the go-to for breast implants, as they create the most natural-looking results. Silicone gel implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes, meaning that a skilled surgeon can find exactly which implant is shaped/sized properly for your goals. Additionally, the gel feels most similar to natural breast tissue.

Saline implants are similar to silicone implants, although they are filled with a saline solution as opposed to gel. Saline implants create a more artificial look – they are quite round and firm to the touch. These are fan favorites for women who prefer a more “Barbie” appearance. Since saline implants are inflated with saline after breast insertion, there is a smaller insertion cut yet greater control over breast implant size.

Understanding Different Types of Breast Implant Placement

Regardless of whether you choose silicone or saline implants, breast implant placement will play a huge role in how natural your results will be. For women looking for a softer, more natural breast augmentation, then placement underneath the muscle is usually preferred for both saline and silicone. However, depending on the details of your breast augmentation, then sometimes silicone implants placed on top of the pectoralis muscle creates the aspired results while still keeping an all-natural look. While the material of your breast implants will ultimately have more sway in how natural your results appear, placement is still vital to achieving a natural aesthetic.

What's the Difference Between Subglandular and Submuscular Placement?

Subglandular placement describes implants placed between the breast tissue and muscle. In other words, silicone implants are placed on top of the muscle. Submuscular placement is when either kind of implants are placed between the muscle and chest wall. While both techniques provide great results, a third technique that combines both subglandular and submuscular placement has quickly become the modus operandi for those looking for natural results – duel-plane breast augmentation.

What is Dual Plane Breast Implant Placement?

Duel-plane breast augmentation is the best of both worlds by combining the best aspects of both subglandular and submuscular placement. Duel-plane technique involves placing the breast implants partly behind the pecotalis muscle and partly behind the breast tissue. To put it simply, the upper part of the implant is covered my muscle and breast tissue while the lower part of the implant is covered by only breast tissue and sits above the muscle. Because muscle covers the top part of the implant, the chances of wrinkling/creasing/rippling is greatly reduced. Additionally, the muscle provides a seamless transition from implant to skin, meaning the top of your implant won’t be visible on the top part of your breast. Also, your cleavage will look more voluminous while still maintaining a natural result, since the upper muscle coverage helps prevent cleavage disruption. As for the lower part of the implant, the tissue-only coverage provides enhanced shape and a naturally perky look and feel.

Which Breast Implant Placement is Best for Small Breasts?

For women with naturally small breasts who are looking to add more “oomph” to their chest, submuscular placement is usually preferred. This is because the smaller the breast, the less chest skin and breast fat there is for a surgeon to work with. This means the entire implant is placed beneath the chest muscle. This creates a smooth transition from the chest to the implant and provides increased implant coverage. This provides the most natural-looking results for our smaller-chested ladies.

What Other Factors Influence the Natural Appearance of Breast Implants?

A skilled surgeon with an artistic eye? Check. An all-encompassing evaluation in which breast implant material, shape, size, and placement is determined uniquely for your body? Check. What’s left? – Procedure recovery. In order to achieve the best breast augmentation results possible, it is very important you follow all post-op instructions and receive adequate rest. Women must be very careful to not lift anything heavy. Even a gallon of milk or a baby is too heavy and can cause painful breast augmentation complications. Additionally, it’s important to stay away from underwire bras, swimming, and bathing after your surgery to avoid discomfort, infection, and inflammation.

While a full recovery varies between 6-8 weeks, most women go through at least a 3-week recovery period before returning to most all normal activities.
