Our Aesthetica Guide to Understanding the Mons Pubis Lift Procedure!

Amanda has always been self-conscious about her body, especially her mons pubis. It seemed larger and more prominent than she thought was natural, and regardless of weight loss and exercise, it never seemed to improve. Wearing tight clothes, swimsuits, or even form-fitting yoga pants was a no-go for Amanda, as insecurity weighed heavily on her mind.

As years went by, Amanda discovered a cosmetic procedure called a mons pubis lift. She was instantly intrigued. After spending hours researching the surgery, reading personal stories, and looking at before-and-after photos, Amanda felt a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, there was a solution to her long-standing problem.

Not long after, Amanda gathered the courage to schedule a consultation with Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Phillip Chang. Now, she’s one of our success stories here at Aesthetica! A mons pubis lift has the potential to empower you to be comfortable with your intimate area and rediscover your confidence and self-esteem! So let our comprehensive guide to mons pubis lift procedures strengthen your resolve to change your life!

What is the Mons Pubis, and Where Is It Located?

The mons pubis — also known as the mons Veneris or simply the mons — is a rounded, fleshy area located above the pubic bone in the human body. This part of the external genitalia is found in both males and females, although it is generally more prominent in females. The mons pubis serves to cushion the pubic bone during sexual intercourse. The female mons pubis is covered with pubic hair, typically developing during puberty.

The mons pubis is located in the lower region of the abdomen, precisely above the pubic bone. In females, the mons pubis is situated just above the clitoris and the labia majora, while in males, it is found above the penis and the base of the scrotum. The mons pubis is positioned over the pubic symphysis (i.e., the joint that connects the two pubic bones at the front of the pelvis).

Causes of Mons Pubis Sagging and Enlargement

Several factors contribute to the sagging or enlargement of the mons pubis, including:

  • Aging: As we age, the skin loses elasticity, and the connective tissue weakens, leading to sagging of the mons pubis. Fat distribution in the body also changes with age, causing the mons pubis to appear more prominent or enlarged.
  • Genetics: Some of our patients have a genetic predisposition to carry more fat in the mons pubis area, causing it to appear enlarged or saggy.
  • Hormonal imbalances: Hormonal fluctuations (e.g., during menopause) affect fat distribution in the body and contribute to enlargement or sagging of the mons pubis.
  • Pregnancy: A woman’s body goes through significant changes during pregnancy, such as weight gain and hormonal fluctuations. These changes cause the mons pubis to enlarge due to the accumulation of fatty tissue and the stretching of the skin. After giving birth, the mons pubis may not return to its pre-pregnancy shape, particularly if the skin has lost its elasticity.
  • Weight gain: An increase in body weight can cause a buildup of fatty tissue in the mons pubis, leading to its enlargement. Weight gain also stretches the skin, making the saggy skin more apparent.
  • Weight loss: Rapid or significant weight loss can result in loose or sagging skin in various body areas, including the mons pubis. This is particularly true when weight loss is not accompanied by regular exercise and strength training to help tighten the skin and underlying muscles.

How is the Mons Pubis Lift Procedure Performed?

The mons pubis lift, also known as monsplasty or mons pubis reduction, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the mons pubis area. It aims to reduce sagging, excess skin, and fat, as well as lift and tighten the area for a more youthful and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Prior to the surgery, a consultation with Dr. Chang and his team of experts is necessary to discuss your goals, expectations, and medical history. Dr. Chang will evaluate your mons pubis and recommend the best course of action (i.e., CoolSculpting, liposuction, or a mons pubis lift).

The mons pubis lift is typically performed under general or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on your preference and Dr. Chang’s recommendation.

Dr. Chang will create an incision within the natural crease of the groin or along the bikini line to minimize the visibility of the scar. The exact location and length of the incision will depend on the amount of excess skin and fat to be removed. He then removes the excess skin and fat from the mons pubis area, either through direct excision, liposuction, or by combining both techniques.

After removing the excess skin and fat, Dr. Chang lifts and tightens the area, suturing it to create a more contoured and youthful appearance. He then closes the incisions using sutures, skin adhesives, or surgical tape.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Mons Pubis Lift?

You are the perfect candidate for a mons pubis lift if you’re dissatisfied with the appearance of your mons pubis due to sagging, excess skin, or fatty deposits. Ideal candidates for this procedure typically meet the following criteria:

  • Great overall health: Candidates should be in great shape without any medical conditions that could increase the risk of complications during or after the surgery.
  • Non-smoker: Smoking can impair the healing process and increase the risk of complications. It is recommended that candidates for a mons pubis lift be non-smokers or be willing to quit smoking before the surgery and during the recovery period.
  • Realistic expectations: It is essential to have a clear understanding of what the procedure can achieve and maintain realistic expectations about the outcome.
  • Stable weight: Candidates should be at or near their ideal body weight, as significant weight fluctuations after the surgery will affect the results. We recommend our mons pubis lift patients maintain a stable weight for several months before the procedure.
  • Emotional stability: As with any cosmetic procedure, candidates should be emotionally stable and have a strong support system to help them cope with the physical and emotional aspects of the surgery and recovery process.
  • Not pregnant or planning to become pregnant: Pregnancy can cause changes in the mons pubis area, so it is advisable to wait until after any planned pregnancies before undergoing a mons pubis lift.

Expected Results and Recovery Time of Mons Pubis Lift

Mons pubis lifting helps patients improve the appearance and contour of the mons pubis area, resulting in a firmer, more youthful-looking mons pubis with reduced sagging and excess skin! However, it’s essential to have realistic expectations and understand that individual results may vary depending on factors such as age, skin elasticity, and the extent of the procedure.

Be sure to consider the following aspects of your mons pubis lift recovery before signing up for the procedure:

  • Downtime: Most patients can return to work and resume light daily activities within one to two weeks after the surgery. However, the exact recovery time may vary depending on the patient’s healing process and the nature of their job or daily activities. As a rule of thumb, taking 3 to 7 days off work will give your body plenty of time to recover.
  • Swelling and bruising: Some degree of swelling, bruising, and discomfort is expected during the first few days to weeks following the procedure. These mild symptoms typically subside gradually and can be managed with pain medications, ice packs, and compression garments, as advised by Dr. Chang’s team.
  • Compression garment: Dr. Chang will recommend wearing a compression garment for 4 weeks to help reduce swelling and support the healing tissues.
  • Physical activity: You should avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and exercise for at least 2 to 4 weeks after the surgery or as directed by Dr. Chang. Gradually resuming activities as healing progresses is essential to avoid complications and ensure optimal results.
  • Follow-up appointments: You will have follow-up appointments with Dr. Chang to monitor the healing process and address any concerns or complications that may arise.
  • Scarring: Scarring is expected after a mons pubis lift, but Dr. Chang will place the incisions in inconspicuous areas
