There are some things that get better with time. Friendships, a fine wine, your favorite blue jeans, and Daniel Craig, just to name a few. Unfortunately, your skin is probably not one of them. As we age, our skin quickly gets thinner, drier, more prone to injury, and less resilient. Collagen production slows down, and the effects of the environment, gravity, and genetics become apparent, leaving skin looking more dull, wrinkled, and sagging. There are a few key things you can do NOW to ensure that as you age, your skin stays as youthful and healthy as possible. After all, we want to be the Jennifer Aniston type of old, right?

1. Protect Your Skin from the Sun

The truth hurts – the sun is your skin’s NUMBER ONE enemy when it comes to wrinkles and premature aging. Rain or shine, DAILY sunscreen is key for your skin’s protection. Apply sunscreen every day that is at least 30 SPF, water-resistant, and says “broad-spectrum” on the label, meaning it protects against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. And, don’t forget to reapply! Also, for the love of Beyonce, PLEASE do not go tanning. Opt instead for tanning lotions or bronzers – no need to go without the glow! When you can, choose clothing that protects your skin from the sun. Rock a cute baseball cap and sunglasses and spare your face, in particular from those laser beams! Your skin will thank you later.

2. Quit Smoking, or Just Don't Start

If you’re reading this, you’re probably a smart cookie interested in staying healthy. So, I probably don’t need to outline how bad smoking is for your body as a whole. In regards to your skin, however, smoking does nothing but harm. We already know that elastin and collagen production decrease naturally with time, but tobacco smoke damages them further. Nicotine restricts blood flow to the skin, ultimately resulting in skin that is WRINKLED, dull, and discolored. Need we say more? Talk to your healthcare provider if you need help quitting!

3. Eat Colorful, Nutrition Foods

Many studies have shown that diet plays a big role in skin health. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and other vitamin-rich foods prevents skin damage and premature aging, while eating sugary foods that are high in carbohydrates does the opposite. Maintaining a healthy, stable weight is also key, so avoid yo-yo dieting and large fluctuations in weight, which cause skin to continuously have to stretch and bounce back. Alcohol dehydrates the skin, so stick to a social drink here and there. Enjoy foods and drinks that actually improve and protect your skin, like salmon, green tea, avocados, and pomegranates.

4. Hydrate Your Body And Your Skin.

Obviously, water is essential for life, but drinking enough of it every day has lots of benefits for your skin. It helps flush toxins and aids in digestion, which in turn, keeps your skin healthy and clear. To help trap all the water you’re drinking in your skin, use a daily moisturizer – a good one! Moisturizers that contain vitamin C and hyaluronic acid are especially good at preventing wrinkles. Drink your water, and give your skin a good drink, too.

5. Use the Right Products, the Right Way.

The number of skincare products available is truly astounding. But in reality, you only need a couple quality products, used the right way, to give your skin the support it needs to stay healthy and youthful. Use a gentle cleanser daily and avoid any products that sting or irritate your skin. Products with antioxidants or peptides can give your skin a nice boost, and most importantly for anti-aging purposes, use a good retinoid to increase collagen production and help your skin stay plump and full.

6. RELAX - Your Face AND Your Body!

Wrinkles form when your face is repeatedly pulled in the same direction. Avoid repetitive facial expressions, and try to consciously relax your facial muscles! Studies show that sleeping on your back helps your face relax fully at night – versus being pulled or squished while you sleep on your stomach or side. If you want to avoid wrinkles, you have to start by avoiding the things that cause wrinkles – and frowning is one of them! So, take a deep breath, unfurrow that brow, and smile (but only gently…no creasing!).

If you find you just can’t keep from frowning, then why not try Botox? It freezes the muscles which stops the frowning, helps reduce the wrinkles already formed, and stops new wrinkles from appearing.
