How to Apply Biocorneum
Apply Biocorneum twice a day. Most patients will apply Biocorneum once in the morning and once at night.
- Ensure that the affected area is clean and dry.
- Apply a thin, even layer twice a day (morning and evening) over the scar area.
- Allow drying completely.
- After application, wait 15 minutes before sun exposure.
- Once dry, Biocorneum can be covered with pressure garments, clothing, cosmetics, or additional sunscreen as needed.
Biocorneum should have 24-hour contact with the scar area for the duration of the treatment. This can be achieved by applying Biocorneum twice a day.

Why Biocorneum?
Have you been considering a procedure but are concerned about scarring? Biocorneum gives you more control over your recovery process by preventing and minimizing scarring. How effective is Biocorneum? Biocorneum was rated as the first choice for preventing hypertrophy of recent scars in clinical trials. For those using Biocorneum to treat existing scars, 80% had high satisfaction in ease of use, cosmetic result, and overall satisfaction.
Scars can be an unwanted visual reminder of a past procedure or injury. But scars are not simply cosmetic. Scar tissue lacks the full function of skin that hasn’t been injured or involved in the surgery. For example, flexibility and the sense of touch may be diminished or completely lost in the scar area. Effectively treating a scar can help to complete your healing process. (2, 3)
Biocorneum is the only advanced scar treatment with FDA-Cleared SilishieldTM patented crosslinking medical grade silicone and SPF 30 that:
- prevents and minimizes the formation of hypertrophic scars
- decreases the appearance of old scars
- protects scars from sun exposure’s darkening effects
- dries quickly to adhere to skin for 12 to 24 hours
Biocorneum can be used on scars resulting from surgical and cosmetic procedures, trauma, wounds, and burns, and it can be effective on old or new scars.
SilishieldTM Patented Crosslinking Silicone
FDA-Cleared Silishield Technology advances the benefits of traditional silicone sheeting through the comfort and ease of a gel. Patented crosslinking silicone creates an invisible shield that feels like a second skin and helps reduce the appearance of scars. It can reduce redness and discoloration, soften and flatten new and older hypertrophic and keloid scars resulting from surgical procedures, injuries, and burns.
Easy, Effective Care for Scar Recovery
- FDA-Cleared SilishieldTM Technology plus SPF 30 sunscreen
- Silky-smooth clear gel is simple to apply and dries quickly

- Great for skin that must flex a lot (such as around joints), irregular surfaces, as well as large scar areas
- Ideal for face, neck, chest, hands, and other areas exposed to the sun
- Once dry, it continues to work when makeup, lotion, or additional SPF protection is applied over it
- It can be combined with other treatment options your physician recommends
- Suitable for children over the age of 6 months

How Biocorneum works
Biocorneum key ingredient, FDA-Cleared SilishieldTM Technology patented crosslinking silicone, advances the benefits of traditional silicone sheeting through the comfort and ease of a gel. Silishield forms a protective shield over the scar area that is optimal for scar healing and cosmetic improvement.
Silishield’s patented technology, made with medical grade silicone, helps to keep skin hydrated and helps control excessive collagen formation that contributes to abnormal scarring. (1)
Sunscreen products protect the area from sun exposure’s darkening effects while Biocorneum maintains its silky-smooth feel and clear appearance.
Clinically backed and patented silicone formula
Biocorneum is the only advanced scar treatment with FDA-cleared SilishieldTM technology plus the protection of SPF 30.
Preventing Scarring
- The self-drying silicone gel used in the study was shown to be effective in reducing the hypertrophy rate of fresh surgical scars. This type of treatment was rated as the first choice for preventing hypertrophy of recent scars.
- Treatment with silicone gel after incision resulted in 67% of scars being rated normal (versus 28% with no treatment), and 26% mildly hypertrophic (versus 45% with no treatment).
Treating existing scars
- Silicone gel was used to treat both newly formed scars (< 3 months) and older scars (at least 4 years), and was shown to be effective at relieving scar symptoms.
- >70% to 85% of patients and physicians reported improvements in scar symptoms after treatment with silicone gel and more than 80% had high satisfaction in ease of use, cosmetic result, and overall satisfaction.
Preferred over other therapies:
Other silicone gels
- BIOCORNEUM is the only topical scar treatment with FDA-cleared SilishieldTM patented crosslinking medical grade silicone and SPF to prevent and minimize the formation of new scars, decrease the appearance of old scars, protect scars from sun exposure’s darkening effects, and dry quickly to adhere to skin for 12 to 24 hours.
- Silishield’s patented technology keeps skin hydrated, minimizing collagen formation that contributes to abnormal scarring.
Topical steroids
- The repeated use of topical steroids is not desirable for extended periods and may cause more harm than benefit.
- Side effects of repeated topical steroid use include epidermal barrier disturbance and increased transepidermal water loss, delayed wound healing, atrophy, telangiectasia, hypopigmentation, and acne.
Silicone sheeting
- Silicone gel was better than silicone sheeting at decreasing scar height and erythema on day 90, and was more beneficial in areas such as inframammary surgical scars, the face, and areas of movement associated with joints. (3)
- Patients favored silicone gel over silicone sheeting because of its invisibility, and both physicians and patients rated it as easier to use. (3)
Other therapies (onion extract, vitamin E)
- Neither onion extract nor vitamin E have been shown to be efficacious in minimizing the severity of hypertrophic scars or promoting the resolution of existing scars. (5)
- Vitamin E does not improve the appearance of scars and is not well tolerated by patients. (6)
Safe
- BIOCORNEUM’s patented self-drying silicone gel, Silishield, caused no side effects such as maceration, rashes, infections, or irritation. (1)
- 98.7% of physicians and 98.2% of patients rated tolerability of the patented silicone formulation as “very good” or “good.” (2)
