About Vaginal Dryness

The diVa laser is a breakthrough technology that can dramatically improve the conditions that cause vaginal dryness. Menopause, loss of estrogen, and the effects of chemotherapy result in the atrophy and thinning of the vaginal lining. The diVa laser stimulates the natural mucus production of the vaginal mucosa (the mucous membrane of the vagina that keeps it moist). Thickening and rejuvenation of the vaginal tissue results in improved blood flow and plasma lubrication. Studies have documented over a 90% improvement in lubrication after the treatment, and over 90% of patients have reported an increase in sexual satisfaction and a decrease in painful intercourse. Other benefits have included a tightening of the vaginal wall as well as recovery in stress urinary incontinence. Schedule a private consult with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Phillip Chang at Aesthetica Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center in Leesburg, VA to learn more about vaginal dryness therapy.

Ideal Candidates

During your consultation, Dr. Chang can discuss all your concerns and determine if you are an ideal candidate for vaginal dryness therapy. The nonsurgical diVa treatment is a high-precision laser that was developed to improve the quality of the vaginal tissue. The diVa laser dramatically improves the following conditions:

  • Vaginal deterioration
  • Diminished vaginal lubrication
  • Problems with orgasm
  • Painful sex
  • Vaginal laxity
  • Stress urinary incontinence (SUI)

Procedure Technique

Vaginal dryness therapy with the diVa vaginal rejuvenation laser is an outpatient procedure that is performed without the need for sedation. Topical numbing medicine is administered prior to the treatment for your comfort and the diVa device is gently inserted into the vaginal canal. The diVa is a hybrid fractional laser that delivers two advanced types of wavelengths to the vaginal tissue. One is designed to target the deeper layer of tissue while the other works more superficially. The laser energy that travels deeper will rejuvenate the tissue that adds support to the vaginal wall including the collagen, nerves, and blood vessels. The laser energy that is directed more superficially will rejuvenate the epithelium and will increase vaginal wall mucosa thickness (tightening) and lubrication. The procedure takes about ten minutes.

What to Expect

After the diVa laser procedure, you can expect to feel localized soreness and cramping for about seven days. Most patients can return to work or normal activities right after their treatment and may resume exercise after about three days. Although a single diVa treatment is very effective and yields great results, multiple treatments may be needed. Typically patients will need 2 – 3 treatments spaced 3 – 4 weeks apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does vaginal dryness therapy cost?
The cost of the treatment will depend on how many sessions are needed to attain the cosmetic results you desire. Dr. Chang can discuss the recommended number of treatments during your initial consultation. Our office also offers financing to make your therapy more affordable.

How is the diVa better than other lasers for vaginal rejuvenation?
The diVa is the first and only hybrid fractional laser for the treatment of the vagina. It has several features that make it better than other laser systems like the MonaLisa and the FemiLift. The MonaLisa and the FemiLift are both CO2 lasers that are less precise and has a higher rate of complications. The diVa is a more sophisticated platform with computer processing that automates and precisely lays down its laser energy.

How does the vagina produce lubrication?
Since the vaginal lining has no glands, the vagina must rely on other methods of lubrication. Plasma from the vaginal walls due to vascular engorgement (swelling that is caused by increased blood flow) is an important source of lubrication. The Bartholin's glands, located slightly below the vaginal opening, also secretes mucus; during ovulation, the cervical mucus can add additional lubrication.

How does vaginal dryness decrease sexual satisfaction?
Vaginal dryness and painful intercourse (dyspareunia) are more common than you think. Vaginal lubrication is an important part of sexual arousal. It readies the vagina for penetration, making it easier for the penis to enter and reducing any accompanying friction or irritation. Without sufficient lubrication, sexual intercourse can be painful.

What are the two common causes of vaginal dryness?
There are many conditions that can cause or aggravate a decrease in vaginal lubrication. The two most common causes include menopause and chemotherapy. Loss of hormonal estrogen can lead to atrophy of the vaginal tissue and the vascular stimulus for plasma extravasation. The result is a decrease in the production of vaginal lubrication.
