About Hand Rejuvenation

The hands are often a telltale sign of age and as the years go by, the hands can begin to lose their youthful fullness, tautness, and clear complexion. As a result, the hands can appear thin or bony and the skin accumulates age or sun spots in addition to fine lines and wrinkles. At Aesthetica Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center in Leesburg, VA, skilled plastic surgeon Dr. Phillip Chang offers hand rejuvenation to correct these issues. Hand rejuvenation involves both volume and skin rejuvenation. The volume replacement can be addressed by a fat transfer or any number of injectable fillers including Voluma, Sculptra, or Radiesse. A fat transfer, however, can provide a more long-lasting and cost-effective solution particularly if other areas are also being addressed. Skin irregularities are improved by a combination of the ProFractional laser which provides needed collagen for taut skin, and the Forever Young BBL which diminishes brown pigmentation. Call our Leesburg, VA office today to see if hand rejuvenation is right for you.

Types of Hand Rejuvenation

Injectable Fillers
Injectable fillers can be used to replace the lost volume in the back of the hand, which increases the visibility of the veins and tendons. Volume replacement can be performed by either injectable fillers or a fat transfer. Injectable fillers have been shown to be effective in replacing volume in the back of the hand. Dr. Chang often recommends Juvederm, Radiesse, and Sculptra because of their long-lasting results.

Injectable Fat Transfer
A fat transfer is an excellent option to replace the lost volume in the back of the hand. The fat is taken by liposuction from the abdomen or waist, processed, and transferred directly into the hand via a sterile syringe. The fat is a living filler so it has the potential for lasting longer than commercial injectable fillers. Further, it is the most natural product as you are the source.

Forever Young BBL Laser
The Forever Young BBL laser system is the most popular laser used at our practice. The broadband light treatment typically results in a 50% improvement with each session, and it is the only laser proven to rejuvenate cellular DNA. BBL is also very helpful in removing the brown and red pigmentation changes of the hand, leading to a more youthful and radiant appearance.

ProFractional Laser Peel
Volume replacement alone is not always enough to reduce the fine lines and wrinkles seen on the hand. The ProFractional laser peel, which is commonly used on the face to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, can be used on the hands along with the Forever Young BBL. This process also promotes collagen production.

Ideal Candidates

You are a good candidate for hand rejuvenation if you are in overall good health, at a stable weight, are a nonsmoker, and concerned about:

  • The thin or bony look of your hands
  • The appearance of veins and tendons
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun spots or hyperpigmentation

Procedure Technique

Hand rejuvenation uses a combination of different procedures including injectable fillers, a fat transfer, and lasers to rejuvenation your hands. The procedures are customized to your individual needs during your initial consultation with Dr. Chang.

Injectable Fillers
A numbing cream is first applied to the skin and the injectable filler is then injected into the back of your hand and fingers. Typically, two syringes of product (Juvéderm, Radiesse, or Sculptra) is required for each hand. Treatment takes about ten minutes.

Fat Transfer
With a fat transfer, fat is first removed via liposuction from the abdomen or hips and then purified. The harvesting portion is done under local anesthesia. Once the fat is processed, it is injected into the back of the hand through a 2mm incision at the base of the wrist.

Laser Treatment
A numbing cream can be applied to the hands but the BBL machine is equipped with a cooling device to promote optimal comfort. The handheld laser is then gently glided along the treatment area to target sun spots and hyperpigmentation. The ProFractional laser process is almost identical, but this laser specifically addresses fine lines and wrinkles for a taut and youthful contour.

What to Expect

A hand rejuvenation is considered an outpatient procedure. Many patients are able to return to their usual activities but fat transfer patients should avoid strenuous exercise for 7 – 10 days to allow for proper healing. Redness, swelling, bruising, and/or itching are normal symptoms but these should subside in a few days. Any discomfort can be eased with pain medication and a cold compress can help reduce swelling. Direct sunlight should also be avoided for 1 – 2 days following a laser rejuvenation treatment for optimal results. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a hand rejuvenation cost?
The cost of a hand rejuvenation depends on the type of method used for your specific condition. The price of injectable fillers, fat transfer, and laser treatments vary. Every patient has a unique treatment plan and can combine several of these procedures to attain the results they desire. An estimated figure can be discussed during your initial consultation.

Will I need more than one treatment?
Although a hand rejuvenation can provide stunning results and even help reverse the signs of aging, it will not stop the aging process. Multiple treatments may be necessary to maintain your results. In general, Juvéderm will last about one year, Radiesse and Sculptra can last 2 – 3 years, and a fat transfer may last for several years. Most patients will benefit from a Forever Young BBL maintenance treatment every 1 – 2 years.

What are the benefits of a fat transfer compared to injectable fillers like Juvéderm, Voluma, or Sculptra?
The most significant benefit of receiving an injectable fat transfer is that it’s your own natural product. It is part of you and when it is transferred to its new location, it develops a blood supply which allows it to live and last for years. The second most significant benefit is that you have unlimited supply since you are the donor. Fat is charged by the procedure and not by the syringe. An unlimited fat donor supply implies that your procedure is significantly more cost effective.

How long does a fat transfer last?
The fat that is transferred is made up of living cells. This explains why fat can last for several years. Fat is the longest-lasting method for volume replacement. However, just like the natural body fat in the face, the fat cells will shrink with age and also be affected by gravity. Many patients will elect to have a second fat transfer procedure in 3 – 5 years.

How much fat is needed?
Most patients only need about 1 – 2 tablespoons of fat harvested from another area of their body to restore the youthful appearance of their hands. The entire process typically takes about 30 minutes.
