Let me tell you a secret: Large breasts affect nearly 1 million American women.

Breast Reduction surgery can resolve the pain of large breasts.

Have you ever experienced chronic neck and upper back pain? What about numbness and tingling in your arms and fingers? Do you experience frequent headaches or even migraines?

If you said yes to some or even one of these questions there is a chance that you may be one of these million women who could benefit from a breast reduction.

When you have large breasts, problems arise in other areas of your body. The extra weight pulls the shoulders forward and compresses nerves in the back which, in turn, can cause significant pain and discomfort. Think about it as wearing a 6 pound weight around your neck all day every day: that would definitely be uncomfortable!

Breast reduction surgery will not only significantly improve these pains and discomforts, but for many women it also gives them breast confidence and better self esteem. Having smaller boobs opens a whole new world to ladies who have struggled with extra large breasts. Maybe you’ll be able to participate in that high intensity cardio class you’ve always wanted to but couldn’t because your boobs couldn’t be contained in any sports bra. Suddenly shirts won’t gap at the bra making you self-conscious.

Breast Reduction surgery works

Having breast reduction surgery is fairly painless and simple. There are several different ways the surgery can be performed, but all have the same end goal: remove breast tissue, fat cells and excess skin.  The result is smaller boobs with a breast lift. Since no muscles or organs are moved during the process, there is very little postoperative pain. Many women are back to work within a week and back to normal life (including going to the gym) within two weeks!

Breast reduction is designed to resolve physical complaints, and doesn’t solely focus on aesthetics. While good shape and contouring is almost always achieved, there will inevitably be some scarring. The degree of scarring is different for each woman, but they don’t seem to be bothered by it: statistics show that over 90% of women are glad they did it and would recommend the procedure to someone else. In addition to external scarring, internal can occur as well.

Breast reduction surgery is so common that even several celebrities have undergone the procedure.

Breast Reduction surgery and breast cancer

There has been some question as to whether this can lead to breast cancer, but recent studies have shown that women who have the surgery have a reduced risk for breast cancer. Reporting in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, author Leroy Young, MD, writes that based on the results of six observational studies conducted in the U.S., Canada, Denmark, and Sweden, women who have this operation are at lower risk for this disease.

The last concern is less serious but should still be mentioned: there is the potential for some nipple numbness, especially if your nipple had to be moved during the surgery. There could be a reduction in milk supply, so if you are planning on breastfeeding in the future, talk to your plastic surgeon during your initial consultation.

Helping with the pain of large breasts

Doctors agree that typical remedies such as physical therapy, ergonomic changes and pain medication do not work as well as breast reduction surgery. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), in 2004 more than 144,000 breast reduction surgeries were performed in the United States alone. For women who have struggled with large breasts, this surgery is so much more than cosmetic: it is life changing!
