Electing to undergo a cosmetic procedure can be a big decision. Getting a procedure done can boost confidence and have effects that will last for many years to come. It is important to have all of your ducks in a row prior to the procedure to make sure that you don’t have any regrets or future medical problems. What are the most important factors to take into consideration when you are electing to have a cosmetic procedure?

It's Not About What, It's About Who

It doesn’t matter if you are getting botox injections or undergoing a full mommy makeover, the most important factor in your procedure is who your physician is. You should always make sure that your physician is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The government doesn’t require any sort of specific training in order for a doctor to offer a procedure. Just because a doctor has a license and is up to date with state laws doesn’t mean they are qualified to perform the procedure.

Location, Location, Location

As with physicians, you should check to make sure that the facility – if it is an out-patient procedure you are having – is board certified as well. Your safety during the procedure is largely dependent on the anesthetist and the cleanliness of the operating facility. You also want to make sure that the facility has key life support systems in case something goes wrong.

Make sure to ask your doctor where they perform surgery and if that facility has any of the following accreditations: AAAASF, AAAHC, JCAHO, IMQ operating facility certification. Also make sure to ask about the Anesthetist’s qualifications as well – a board certified Anesthetist or a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) will be administering the anesthesia during the procedure.

Aesthetics and Gut Feel

It’s important to look at samples of prior work that the physician and office has performed. What one person finds beautiful isn’t necessarily the same as someone else. The doctor may have a lot of experience in the specific procedure you want; but if you don’t like any of their previous work, they might not be the right doctor for you.

It’s also important to make sure that you feel comfortable working with your doctor and their support team. It is important that you trust them. Are they giving you lots of information on the procedure you are having? Are you being treated in a friendly and courteous way? Do you feel that the physician is listening to you?

Quality not Price Point

A medical procedure is not something that you should be bargain hunting for. If the price is too good to be true, a lot of times it’s because it is. Putting yourself in harms way in order to save a bit of money is not worth the risk. Most treatment centers will provide a free consultation. Make use of them and shop around. If you were having an addition on your home, you would get multiple quotes. Do some research before to get a sense of cost for the procedure you want.

Also, make use of the online reviews. What are previous patients saying about the physician and center? Ask for recommendations from other people who have had similar procedures. There is always a Facebook group to ask these kinds of questions.

Questions To Think About On A Visit

1.  Is the Surgeon’s office clean and sanitary?

2.  Did the surgeon listen to me and understand what I wanted?

3.  Where the nurses and receptionists profession and friendly?

4. Is the procedure going to be performed in the office or at a local out-patient facility?

5. What are the credentials of the surgeon?

6. How much experience does the surgeon have in the procedure I want?

7. Does the office have parking and is it close by? (This could be important after a procedure.)

8. Do I like what the surgeon is recommending for me? Do I trust them? Am I happy to tell them everything about myself?

9. Are they clear about the costs?
