Kybella: The Double Chin Fix You’ve Been Looking For
Everyone loves a pudgy baby with a cute double chin. Those extra fat rolls make us want to pinch a baby’s cheeks and coo over how precious he is.
But then we look in the mirror and see a similar bulge peeking out from under our chin. This time, our reaction isn’t quite so fond.
Double chins appear due to a little fat pocket that can seem impossible to get rid of. But thanks to an amazing treatment called Kybella, you can get rid of your double chin for good without surgery or a long recovery time.
Where Does A Double Chin Come From?
Kybella: Your Double Chin Solution
Kybella is a fat reducing injection that is gaining popularity for defining chins. It’s non-surgical and uses an acid found naturally in your body. It’s called deoxycholic acid, a bile acid. It already works in your body to help absorb fat it doesn’t need, so it makes sense to use it as an injectable.
During a Kybella treatment, a trained medical professional injects this acid in your chin area. Once the area receives the injection, Kybella starts working to dissolve and absorb the unwanted fat. Kybella requires a series of treatments. But once complete, patients typically experience a 10-20% fat reduction in the treated area.
Who Should Get Kybella
Does your double chin make you feel self-conscious? You don’t need to live with that! If you have a mild or moderate amount of fat under your chin, Kybella is an FDA-approved, non-surgical option for removing those unwanted fat cells! Many people choose this treatment over liposuction. You just need to be at least 18 years old. Women who are pregnant and nursing should also avoid Kybella. And you also shouldn’t have this treatment if you’ve had facial surgery.

Preparing For Kybella Injections
You can easily prepare for your Kybella injections since the procedure is non-surgical. But you can do a few things to make the procedure and recovery go more smoothly:
- Carefully wash your face before the procedure.
Avoid over-the-counter pain relievers
- Schedule the procedure when your event calendar is light
- You absolutely must avoid taking pain relievers like ibuprofen prior to your injections. If you don’t avoid them, you risk much more severe bruising afterwards.
You should also let your doctor know about any allergy history and if you’ve had any medical surgeries in the past.
Recovering From Kybella Injections
The short down time is one of the best aspects of Kybella injections for removing excess chin fat! Mild swelling, redness, and some numbness in the injection area are normal and can last up to a week. We strongly recommend icing the injection area to help reduce the swelling and potentially reduce the recovery time.
Because Kybella injections don’t require anesthesia, you can leave the office and return to your normal activities in the same day.
You should call your doctor right away if you notice any facial weakness, severe pain, or difficulty swallowing. While these side effects to Kybella are abnormal, you should make sure you see a doctor as soon as possible if you notice them.
How Many Kybella Treatment Sessions?
Each individual treatment session doesn’t very long at all: you can expect each treatment to take about 15-20 minutes. And most people need multiple treatment sessions to achieve their desired results. The total number of treatments depends on the person. Some may need 2 treatments while others need 3 or more. The treatments are typically spaced one month apart (to give Kybella time to work!) and are limited to 6 total treatments.
Kybella Treatment Results
You should start seeing Kybella injection results in about 4-6 weeks after the first treatment. After all the treatments are done, you’ll see a 10-20% reduction in the fat under your chin.
And Kybella treatments are long-lasting! As the deoxycholic acid destroys the fat, it keeps other fat from storing as well. And once fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good. But in order to maintain your results, we recommend that you exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet so new fat cells won’t appear.
Kybella Safety Concerns
Kybella is an FDA approved injection for reducing chin fat. But, as with any cosmetic procedure, it does come with a few associated risks. At this time, it’s not approved for use on any other area of the body. You also need to be 18 years or older to receive the treatment. The injections can sometimes look lumpy and can sometimes affect the lower lip’s motor nerve.
Because any procedure including Kybella has potential side effects, it’s important to receive any treatment from a trained and reputable medical professional.
