Everyone knows that having a good skincare routine is an essential part of wrinkle prevention. The problem is, most of us think this only refers to taking care of your face. We don’t think twice about wrinkles below the chin until they are already there! The décolletage begins below the chin and ends above the breasts and can turn some serious heads when graced with a plunging neckline or an elegant strapless gown. Taking care of this area is so important for maintaining a youthful and vibrant appearance, especially with the growing popularity of low and revealing necklines. With the promise of warmer weather slowly but surely approaching, the ease of hiding behind scarves and turtlenecks is coming to an end. It’s time to give your décolletage the love and admiration it deserves with these tried and true tips and tricks!

Prevention is the Best Medicine

When it comes to wrinkles, as cliche as it might sound, prevention truly is the best medicine. Lucky for us, there are many safe and effective methods for fending off those stubborn décolletage wrinkles.

Avoid Sun Exposure

Avoiding direct sunlight during the sun’s strongest hours will help prevent skin damage and decrease your risk of developing skin cancer. Don’t get me wrong, sunlight can work wonders for increasing vitamin D in the body as well as promoting a happy and balanced mood. However, it is important to take in sunlight in moderation due to the sun’s ability to break down elastin and collagen in the skin, adding to older-looking and easily wrinkled skin. If you need to be out in the sun during peak hours, wear your sunscreen! You can also wear SPF protective clothing to decrease damage from the sun’s UV rays.

Treat It Like Your Face

Many of us have a skin routine down pat when it comes to our faces. We simply forget to use that same routine on our décolletage! The skin on this area is thin and delicate and will benefit from the same exfoliation, cleansing, and moisturizing that you would use in your normal skincare routine

Sleep On Your Back

If you are a stomach or side sleeper, you may notice creases and wrinkles on your chest when you wake up in the morning. These creases are natural and simply due to your skin being in an unnatural position for a prolonged period of time. They will eventually fade in a few minutes or so. However, over time, they may take longer and longer to fade until they are permanent wrinkles. Sleeping on your back as much as possible protects your décolletage and decreases the chances of developing premature wrinkles.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Maintaining a healthy and balanced well-being benefits not just your décolletage, but your overall skin health as well.  Happy and healthy skin can be achieved through eating a balanced diet, living an active lifestyle, staying well hydrated, getting enough sleep, and drinking alcohol in moderation.

You may be thinking, “Ok Prevention is great, but what do I do if I already have décolletage wrinkles?” Don’t panic! There are several options to help treat those pesky wrinkles that are readily available to you.

Microneedling

This procedure, as you may have guessed from the name, uses tiny needles to prick the skin, creating teeny tiny cuts all over the area. As the skin heals, it causes your body to create more collagen and elastin, leaving you with smoother, younger-looking skin.

Laser Treatments

Different laser treatments are able to penetrate the superficial layer of the skin, treating fine lines and wrinkles. They are also able to treat sunspots and discoloration as an added bonus! Speak with your doctor to see if and which laser treatment is right for you.

Retinoids

Retinoid medicines are considered the gold standard when it comes to anti-aging treatment. These vitamin A derivatives can boost collagen production, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, promote the production of new blood vessels, and create overall softer, more even-toned skin.

The bottom line is that the décolletage is an area that we really can’t afford to ignore. Fortunately, there are several super easy steps that can preserve the appearance of this delicate skin. And for those of us that may already find ourselves with perhaps a not-so-smooth décolletage, there are treatments that can help reverse the damage. Whichever you decide, you will be looking like the show-stopping fabulous person that you are!
