Armpit Boobs – Is It An Actual Thing?3 min read

There is a fantastic show on Netflix called “I’m Sorry.” It is a comedy show about a woman who writes pretty lewd comedy for a living and how she manages her naturally risque humor with her family life. There are plenty of ‘oh no’ and laugh-out-loud moments, and it’s compulsive viewing in my household. The creator and star of the show is Andrea Savage, a comedian, actor, and writer who has appeared in many shows including Veep. The show is based on her real life experiences.
In one of the episodes, Andrea has to have a operation to remove her extra breast tissue from under her armpits. This is something that happened to her in real life, and she wanted to write about the experience to inform people of this condition. As a comedian, she approached it with humor and merriment. So what is this condition?
Axillary Breast Tissue
Breast tissue is mostly found in your breast area, but sometimes it can migrate to other areas of your body. It only affects a small percentage of women: 2% – 6%. The armpits are the most common area of the body for breast tissue to appear.
These lumps are usually benign and non-cancerous, but can be uncomfortable and – like your breasts – can be sore and swell during your menstrual cycle. They look like fatty lumps and show clearly when wearing sleeveless tops. This can cause self-confidence issues, and women with this extra breast tissue seek out help to have it removed.
Should It Be Removed?
Depending on the amount of breast tissue, many women choose to live with it. Reasons to have it removed are:
- If it is uncomfortable to wear bras.
- The area is sore each month during the menstrual cycle.
- It is causing confidence issues that may impact social and work life.
If it is of concern, a trip to the doctors is recommended. They may suggest a plastic surgeon consultation to talk over options.

What Can Be Done To Remove It?
The good news is there is a very simple procedure that can remove the breast tissue with a small amount of scarring. Dr. Chang has done this procedure many times and is experienced in removing the breast tissue and providing minimal scarring.
It is a surgical route – just like Andrea had. The tissue is liposuctioned out if there are small amounts, and this is performed under local anesthetic. For larger tissue that needs to be excised, a general anesthetic is required. The scar is placed in the fold of the armpit ensuring it is hidden when wearing sleeveless tops.
Is There A Long Recovery Period?
There will be some discomfort while the excision site heals and there may be swelling which will go down about a week later. Light exercise is advised for the first four weeks; but after those four weeks and with the surgeons approval, women can go back to doing what they did before. The full effects of the surgery should be seen around six months later.
