Losing weight is a tremendous personal victory! To achieve their weight loss goals, many people choose diet and exercise, bariatric (or weight loss) surgery, or a combination of the two.  These methods, especially combined, allow clients to move closer to their target goals with great momentum.

If you are on a weight loss journey, you might be considering a Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery to help you along! Bariatric surgery includes a variety of highly-effective procedures to help people struggling with obesity to shed weight by shrinking the size of their stomach through surgical means.

Keep reading to learn more about the different types of bariatric weight loss surgeries.

Gastric Steepling (or Stapling)

Gastric Stapling transforms the upper part of the stomach into a small “pouch” by stapling portions of the stomach together. This works particularly well for patients who struggle with limiting portion size.

Gastric Banding

A subset of Gastric Stapling is called Gastric Banding. In this process, the surgeon uses an inflatable band to squeeze the stomach in two. Both portions become small pouches that severely limit food intake. A half a cup to a cup is usually all a patient can eat in one sitting before feeling sick. This surgery is simple to do, leaving only a small scar, promising a quicker recovery, and the band is removable in a later surgery.

Gastric Balloon

A deflated balloon is lowered into the stomach (through the mouth). Once in place, it’s filled with saline triggering the feeling of fullness. This non-surgical solution isn’t intended for people who’ve already had weight loss surgery. Your doctor leaves it in place for six months, at which time people often achieve a 10 percent reduction in body weight.

Sleeve Gastrectomy

In a Sleeve Gastrectomy, a plastic surgeon would remove approximately 75% of the patien’s stomach, shaping it into a narrow tube or sleeve and connecting it to the intestines. This weight loss surgery is a low-risk procedure for people struggling with obesity or health issues. A sleeve gastrectomy doesn’t affect the intestines so your body can still absorb food naturally.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric Bypass uses a two-pronged strategy. It restricts how much food enters the stomach and bypasses a portion of the small intestine, limiting the amount of calories the body absorbs. This procedure provides dramatic weight loss usually within 6 months and continues over the course of two years.

Because of this rapid weight loss, conditions related to obesity – like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, sleep apnea, and heartburn – often get better quickly.

Studies show that Gastric Bypass Surgery produces long term results. After the procedure, many people keep the weight off for 10 years or longer.

After Weight Loss Surgery

Achieving major weight loss is highly-empowering! The burden lifted is deeper than physical weight. With that transformation, though, you might face a new challenge of sagging skin. Cosmetic surgery after weight loss is definitely a proven solution that provides a lasting step in the journey of personal transformation.

Once you have lost the weight and kept at a stable weight for 6 months or more, you would be a good candidate for post-weight loss surgeries like:
