Many patients, especially women who have just given birth, become pretty self-conscious about the excessive loose skin gathered in the abdominal area. However, there is no shame in correcting these aesthetic imperfections if restoring your youthful self will bring back your confidence and self-esteem! So, if you find yourself in these shoes, look no further: tummy tuck is the perfect solution for you!

What is a Tummy Tuck, and What Does the Procedure Imply?

A tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries for body contouring. It aims to give you the perfect abdominal area by removing excessing fat and skin from it. It also tightens the abdominal wall for a more toned aspect of the muscles. The tummy tuck is quite popular amongst both men and women.

During the tummy tuck surgery, a long incision will be made over the belly area, from one hip to the other. Next, the surgeon will tighten the abdominal muscles by adding internal sutures. They will also remove all excess skin and fat. That’s it!

The recovery time is not hard to get through, as the surgery is easy. To fully recover from a tummy tuck surgery, it takes about six weeks, from which about two you will have to take time off from work. There are a few common symptoms you may experience during the recovery, such as discomfort, swelling, bruising, and soreness, but they are easily treated with medication prescribed by your plastic surgeon.

Why Should Moms Consider a Tummy Tuck for Their Body Contouring Goals?

Giving birth can take a drastic toll on the body, so it is only natural for a woman to wish for her body to return to the way it looked before going through pregnancy. However, you have to keep in mind that being a mother sometimes means putting your children’s needs over your own. And so this means it will become increasingly more challenging for a mother to get her body back to the way it looked. So why not treat yourself? A tummy tuck procedure is a great way to pamper yourself after giving birth. Experiencing a boost in confidence and self-esteem is exactly what you might need!

What are the Medical Benefits of a Tummy Tuck?

There are many medical benefits the tummy tuck surgery brings to the table. After giving birth, a woman’s body can become relatively weak, leading to other health problems. Some medical benefits the tummy tuck surgery are:

1: Reducing SUI (Stress Urinary Incontinence)

Stress urinary incontinence is a bladder control condition that appears when too much pressure forms in your bladder and urethra. The symptoms of SUI are uncontrollable leakage induced by actions such as laughing, sneezing, coughing, and exercising. Luckily, tummy tucks can help patients with SUI! A small bladder blocker is created with tissue from the pelvic area during surgery, which reduces urinary incontinence.

2: Hernia Correction

A hernia occurs when the intestine or abdominal tissue pushes through the abdominal wall and breaks it. A hernia burst is one of the most painful injuries anyone can experience.

A tummy tuck procedure can prevent the appearance of a ventral hernia! As the surgery strengthens and tightens the abdominal wall, the reappearance of the ventral hernia is largely prevented. The tummy tuck surgery is not a method of repairing a ventral hernia, but if paired with an adequate method, such as hernia repair surgery, it can impede its reappearance.

3: Diminishing Back Pain

A strong posture is essential for your confidence. After giving birth, your core may weaken, which is entirely normal and expected. Pregnancy can stretch and loosen the abdominal muscles that may not contract sufficiently after birth. Many patients found an improvement in their posture after a tummy tuck procedure.

What are the Cosmetic Benefits of a Tummy Tuck?

First and foremost, the tummy tuck procedure is a cosmetic surgery aimed at restoring the pristine aesthetics of your abdominal area. After the surgery, your stomach will become flat and toned, as if you never experienced pregnancy or excessive fatty tissue deposits!

Am I a Good Candidate for Tummy Tuck?

Anyone wishing to perfect or retouch their abdominal area is a great candidate for this cosmetic surgery. Usually, the standard clientele is women who have recently given birth and people who experienced drastic weight loss—it is only natural, as the tummy tuck surgery was designed to flatten and tone the abdominal area. But anyone unhappy with the way their stomach looks is a great candidate!

How Do Patients Prepare for a Tummy Tuck?

Before undergoing any surgery, you have to consult your plastic surgeon and, if necessary, undergo some tests. Medication or treatments you may be taking can turn dangerous if you undergo a tummy tuck. Your plastic surgeon may ask you to stop taking a treatment or adjust it so that complications won’t appear. You will also have to stop smoking in advance, as it is required with any surgery. Also, taking aspirins, herbal supplements, and anti-inflammatory medication has to stop as they can increase the risk of bleeding.

Postprocedural Expectations after a Tummy Tuck

As with any postprocedural recovery, the first couple of days are the most uncomfortable. Ask someone close to you to pick you up from the plastic surgery clinic after you are allowed to leave. You also have to ask someone to keep a close eye and care for you, especially if you have children.

Tummy tucks do not have a painful recovery time. Your doctor may provide you with pain medicine to use for 2-3 days, after which you can rely on Advil or Tylenol for pain relief. You will also be prescribed antibiotics and maybe some anticoagulants. Also, you may need some topical ointment for the incision area.

What is the Average Cost of a Tummy Tuck?

There are numerous places where you can have the surgery, so the prices vary. Usually, a tummy tuck procedure starts somewhere around $7.000. However, the price of the surgery can vary depending on the surgeon’s experience and location, patient’s anatomy, facility fees, size of the area, excessive fat and skin that you want to be removed, and how long the surgery will take.
