Were you satisfied by the jewelry you’ve worn over the years but now deal with its toll on your body? You are not alone. We often hear about the joy connected to jewelry but not its impact, particularly when it comes to our earrings and earlobes. Or, perhaps it isn’t beautiful, weighted earrings, but instead an injury or the typical impact of aging that’s caused an issue with one or both of your earlobes? If you need information about earlobe repair, we’ve got everything you need to know here!

What is Earlobe Repair Surgery?

More people than before seek to have their earlobes repaired. As a result, the procedure is on its way to becoming one of the most sought-after in the United States. Earlobe repair surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. Once the area for repair is numbed appropriately, your procedure will begin and doesn’t last long or involve significant post-surgical restrictions. In fact, most patients can drive themselves home or to work immediately!

When is Earlobe Surgery Necessary?

You may want to consider earlobe surgery if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Torn earlobes: from heavy jewelry or yanking;
  • Stretched earlobes: some piercings may create a pull on the earlobes;
  • Pixie ear: this is a corrective measure from some facelifts;
  • Saggy earlobes: when the skin loses volume and earlobes appear droopy or wrinkled;

Large earlobes: if you have larger lobes.

How to Prepare for the Procedure

Earlobe repair surgery is typically an outpatient procedure but still requires some preparation. Dr. Chang and his team of experts at Aesthetica will meet with you for both physical and aesthetic goal assessment. You will also be asked to do a complete medical history and a physical exam.

Like any other medical procedure, you’ll have to prepare ahead of time for post-surgery healing. Sharing any health issues that could affect your healing journey is essential. For example, having diabetes or being a current or recent smoker should be brought to Dr. Chang’s attention. You’ll also want to share any medications, supplements, or anything you take that could impact you during or after your recovery.

How is the Procedure Performed?

Earlobe repair surgery is fairly simple and generally takes between 15-20 minutes (for one ear) and 30-40 minutes (for both ears) to perform. Generally, you can expect your earlobe to be cleaned and anesthetized. Next, excess or any drooping skin will be removed, and then depending on your individual tailored plan, Dr. Chang will arrange your skin and tissue to achieve the natural-looking goals in your plan.

Here are some examples of potential procedures:

Torn Earlobes

If your earlobes are torn, Dr. Chang may use a layered technique with sutures on top of the ear, on the back of your earlobe, and tissue in the middle. Stitches can be removed in about a week, and after a few months, you can choose to get your repaired earlobe pierced again.

Gauged or Stretched Earlobes

If you have stretched or gauged earlobes, your excess skin will be removed over a snip where your connecting strip of skin exists. The extra skin will be used to help reshape your earlobe, and Dr. Chang will choose the closure technique. Similar to torn earlobes, the stitches can be removed in about a week.

Pixie Ear or Facelift Correction

If you’ve had a previous facelift and your earlobe shape shifted, Dr. Chang can help create a natural earlobe that will restore symmetry and boost your confidence.

Saggy or Thin Earlobes

Patients have both surgical and non-surgical options available for droopy earlobes. If you are a candidate for a non-surgical procedure, you can repair your earlobe(s) by injecting a dermal filler, typically hyaluronic acid. You can choose the surgical route, which requires an incision in the back of your ear. Fillers may be used here as well, but your excess skin will be removed.

Can This Procedure Correct Floppy Earlobes?

If you have floppy earlobes, where the skin is not as plump or firm as it could be, you may be a candidate for another procedure and not require surgery. An injectable called Restylane can correct this problem, with results typically lasting up to one year!

What Does the Recovery Process Look Like?

Recovery from earlobe repair surgery is straightforward; you can traditionally resume everyday activities immediately. Dr. Chang and his team of experts will provide guidance for healing. You should take good care of the area carefully and not cause any bending, strain, stress, or pressure for at least a week.

Can I Pierce My Ears Again after the Procedure?

Typically, patients should wait at least 4–6 weeks before re-piercing their ears. You also want to be conscious of where your new piercing will be. It is often recommended that you re-pierce a few millimeters from your previous site.

Earlobe Repair Cost

The cost of your repair is something to discuss during initial pre-procedure preparation. However, each case is different and determined by factors such as time spent on your repair, whether you need more of a complex procedure, and many other factors that seem directly unrelated but impact cost, such as clinic location.

At Aesthetica, earlobe repair prices range from $900 (one earlobe) to $1350 (two earlobes). Since it is a cosmetic procedure, insurance policies do not traditionally cover earlobe repair surgery. With that said, it can be a truly beneficial procedure with a high impact on self-confidence and aesthetic goals. There are often payment options to discuss during the consultation.
