If you’ve ever been pregnant, you know everyone loves to talk about the end result. But few people discuss postpartum recovery! Breast augmentation recovery is exactly the same. The time of recovery after a breast augmentation surgery is rarely spoken about; and yet, you probably have questions if you’re considering or have had a breast augmentation.

We are here to take the mystery away from the post-surgery period. It doesn’t have to be something to fear or be anxious about. Let us walk with you on your journey to a full recovery from your breast augmentation.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a general term that can encompass any number of breast surgeries, including breast lifts, breast implants, breast reductions, or any combination of those. Depending on which combination of surgeries you will be undergoing, your recovery length and overall will look different.

When Does Tightness Go Away After Breast Augmentation?

After a breast augmentation surgery is performed, it is normal to experience a tightness and discomfort in the chest area, both in the breasts themselves, and in the underlying chest muscles. The tightness generally dissipates after the first or second week post-operation; however, some clients experience stiffness in the underlying muscles for the next month.

How Painful is Breast Augmentation?

We have great news for you: breast augmentation surgery itself is not painful! It is a significant surgery that requires patients to be under a general anesthetic, so you will not experience any discomfort during the surgery itself. Depending on what type of augmentation you are undergoing, your pain levels during recovery will vary. You will be prescribed prescription painkillers for the first few days after surgery, but most clients are able to address any discomfort with over the counter painkillers within the first week. If you feel anxious about how you will cope with recovery, ask your doctor for ways to help recovery be less uncomfortable, and read up on reviews and recommendations from other clients.

How Long is Recovery from Breast Augmentation?

There are several stages of recovery from breast augmentation. The first stage, in which your breasts are swollen and sore (limiting your activity) will be for the first two weeks after surgery. The second stage, in which you are mostly recovered but still being cautious about activity levels and restrictive clothing, lasts until six weeks after surgery. Stage three is very casual, as life will mostly be back to normal. As your breasts continue to heal and “settle,” your final results will emerge around six months post-operation.

How to Sleep After a Breast Augmentation?

If you are usually a “tummy sleeper,” you may be concerned about how you are going to rest well after surgery. If you are typically someone who sleeps on their side or stomach, it may be a good idea to practice sleeping on your back before surgery. After a breast augmentation, it is recommended that you sleep on your back with some elevation to allow swelling to go down. After about two weeks, side sleeping can be re-introduced, but sleeping on your stomach should wait until at least six weeks after surgery.

What to Expect Three Weeks After Breast Augmentation Surgery

You can expect life three weeks after your breast augmentation to look fairly typical. Most of the swelling and drainage should be done; your breasts should be less tender; and while your activity levels should still be moderate, you should be back to work and most of your regular activities.

You’ll be able to continue most activities as soon as you feel able after your breast augmentation, but it is important to listen to your body, and not overdo it

How Much Drainage is Normal After Breast Augmentation?

It is normal to have up to four drains placed after your breast augmentation surgery, and your doctor will give you a good idea of how much drainage you can expect to see from each drain. If you exceed the amount your doctor has estimated to be normal, contact your doctor’s office immediately.

Breast augmentation is a life-changing experience, and recovery can be an intimidating aspect that can hold you back. But don’t be afraid of the recovery period! With help, you will get through and begin enjoying the amazing benefits of your rejuvenated breasts for the rest of your life!
