Life, love, and low libido…not particularly the best combination. But sometimes, it’s really hard to get into the mood. While times of low sex drive are normal, sometimes prolonged periods where women don’t have desire for sex can be a signal of a deeper issue. Whether the cause be young children, stressful jobs, sleep deprivation, menopause, or other life triggers, there are a lot of ways that women can up their sex drive and find intimacy enjoyable and desirable again.
Causes of Low Libido
There are a number of external factors that can affect your libido. Some of the most common causes are:
- Sexual problems – pain during sex and difficulty achieving orgasm can affect a woman’s desire to have sex.
- Medications – some prescription drugs and particularly antidepressants can lower libido, so it’s important to check the side effects of any medications and talk with your doctor.
- Fatigue – you can be too tired for sex due to lifestyle, be recovering from an illness, or getting used to a stressful life adjustment.
- Alcohol / Drugs – maybe one glass of wine makes you feel sexy but too much can affect your libido. Recreational drugs can also lower libido.
- Menopause & Hormones – during menopause, estrogen levels drop which can lower libido. Aging in general can also interfere with a woman’s sex drive.
- Stress – No surprise here, what doesn’t stress mess with! However, low libido due to stress is a lot more common than people think.
- Anxiety / Depression – sometimes mental health challenges contribute to low libido.
- Low self-esteem – for some women, poor body image, negative self-thoughts, and self-criticism can negatively affect libido.
- Relationship issues – this is another one of the most common reasons for low libido. A strained relationship, bad communication, and frustration can all reduce libido.
These issues don’t only negatively impact women — men can also suffer from low libido due to the same reasons. To read more about low male libido, click here.
How To Treat Low Libido
If you are finding your low libido is affecting your relationships and day to day life, there are treatment options. Of course, you should visit with your primary physician to talk over your medical and relationship history. They may perform a pelvic exam to check physical changes such as thinning of the vaginal tissues and pain points. Blood work could be done to check your hormone levels. Aside from visiting the doctor though, there are many other ways you may want to treat low libido.
For issues such as lifestyle changes, mental health challenges, stress, and additional factors, sometimes things like changing routine, finding ways to de-stress, confiding in friends or family, seeking therapy, and talking with a doctor can all help address the issues that may underline low libido.

Sex Counseling & Education For Low Libido
Sometimes the best thing that a couple can do for their sex life is to seek counseling and education. Counseling can help reignite the flame in a relationship, help the couple better overcome relationship issues, and improve communication. A therapist may suggest reading material, exercises, and other things. Additionally, becoming better educated about sex with a therapist or counselor about sex, pleasure, and new methods may help couples having trouble finding fulfillment in the bedroom.
Medications & Supplements
As stated earlier, medications and supplements can lower libido. If this is a concern, research your medications for side effects and talk to your doctor about how your body may be reacting to any medications or supplements. However, on the other hand, sometimes medication and supplements can increase sex drive and help women find the zest they’re looking for. Iron, for example, can play a role in sex drive. If you’re low on iron, it can dampen your desire for sex. Seafood, dark leafy greens, beans, and meats can all help increase iron levels. However, too much iron is not good, so it’s wise to monitor iron intake.
Talk to your doctor about what medications and supplements can help you with your sexual drive and libido.
Rebalancing Your Hormones
Low libido is a common symptom of menopause and common in older women. Blood work can determine if your hormone levels are low. If hormones are a factor in your low libido then we would recommend Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) pellets. Pellets are inserted just under the skin to provide a steady stream of hormones in your bloodstream for four to six months. Rebalancing estrogen and testosterone hormone levels can help many menopausal symptoms including a low libido and painful intercourse.
Vaginal Rejuvenation
If your low libido is connected to painful intercourse due to vaginal dryness consider the diVa Laser System. It is a non-surgical laser wand that stimulates the natural mucus production within the vagina helping to plump the tissue. This plumpness results in improved blood flow and increased lubrication. Painful intercourse is reduced which helps the brain rewire to remember that sex is fun and pleasant. This has an effect on the libido.
