Fat under the chin can be seen in both young patients older patients seeking out a more refined neck line. The desire for treatment of the dreaded double chin has increased dramatically with the explosion of social media and selfies. Fortunately, the treatment is quick and easy.
The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, naturally-occuring substance in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your skin, Kybella causes destruction of fat cells and leaves the surrounding cells unharmed. Patients may require multiple treatments depending on the amount of fat in the area. Treatments are spaced 6-8 weeks apart.
Kybella patients, on average, see about a 10-20% fat reduction of the treated area after a full series of treatments. Kybella will not produce the same results as liposuction. However, an area can be treated multiple times to achieve a higher degree of fat loss. It’s important to have realistic expectations.
It’s important to be at a stable weight and to be able to commit to maintaining a healthy lifestyle through proper diet and exercise in order to maintain your results.
Just a bit of extra fat in the upper throat area will create the presence of a "double chin" that may be unwanted by both women and men. The additional pockets of fat below the chin (or the submental area) can be caused by weight fluctuations, aging, or genetics that lead to a softer jawbone and chin for a less defined profile.
Leesburg, VA plastic surgeon Dr. Phillip Chang is happy to provide a revolutionary technique to reduce neck fat at Aesthetica Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center. Approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), Kybella is a new nonsurgical option for upper neck fat. The active component in Kybella is a synthetically made version of deoxycholic acid, which works similarly like the body's natural DA to dissolve and absorb fat cells. After it has been injected beneath the chin, you can see a visible decrease in the amount of fat. When the fat is removed, the cells will not regenerate, so you can enjoy your new, slender neck and defined jawline for years to come.
The ideal candidates for Kybella injectable treatments have unwanted fat in the upper throat (submental area), which creates a double chin or unwanted volume. This injection corrects resistant areas of fat that can't be removed with common weight loss techniques due to genetics, aging, and several other conditions. If you are near a healthy, stable weight, but exercise and diet have not been able to eliminate the fat in your submental area, Kybella may be the correct option for your goals. While Kybella can be used to remove small or moderate pockets of fat in the upper neck, significant pockets of fat may be better suited for surgical neck liposuction at Aesthetica Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center.
"It's been over a year and a half since I've been going to Dr. Chang's office, I drive an hour just to get here (although I know some drive three hours or more to see him!). I did a lot of research to find a board certified plastic surgeon in the area with a solid and reputable background.Throughout my visits, he's been incredibly kind and taken the time to listen to my never ending list of questions. There are a lot of doctors that push services that you don't need just for money but he'll be transparent to tell you exactly what he feels you'll need in order to gain improvement and will work with you to see what could be the best outcome. You can also text or email him directly after any invasive procedures if you have any questions/concerns instead of waiting for a follow up. I also don't want to forget the rest of the staff - everyone from the receptionists and nurses have been very gracious, patient and accommodating to my needs but I also want to mention Melanie whose an RN at Dr. Chang's office. She has superb bed side skills and truly makes you feel at ease when you're speaking with her. I've probably annoyed her with a million questions and emails but she's still been stellar. I highly recommend her for any non-surgical procedures. They have a few videos on their website and youtube as well so you have an idea of who they are and the procedures they perform if you want to get a better idea yourself but I definitely recommend them, they're awesome."- M. / Google / Jul 24, 2018

Double chin fat or larger fat collections can be treated by both Kybella and / or Liposuction. Both are office-based procedure that take less than an hour to perform. Patients with mild to moderate fat collections are better candidates for Kybella because these patients will usually need only one or two treatments for less than $2,000 dollars. Larger fat collections might take more treatments and more money. These patients might be better candidates for neck liposuction which will cost about $3,000 for one treatment.
Are the results from Kybella permanent?
Kybella destroys the targeted fat cells permanently. It is important to understand, however, that not all of the cells are destroyed. Therefore, patients with significant weight gain can regain fat under their chin.

Kybella does not by itself shrink skin. Patients with good elasticity and mild to moderate fat will generally have a good result with excellent skin retraction. This might not be true if there is a lot of fat removed or if there is poor skin elasticity.
