Juvederm Ultra XC is the most commonly used filler in the United States.
It is part of the Juvederm family of hyaluronic acid products made by Allergan who also makes Botox. The transparent soft gel is used to replace or supplement facial volume in areas like the lips, under-eye hollows and cheeks. It is absorbed by the body over 9 months to a year. It is considered one of the safest injectable fillers because it is a soft biocompatible gel that is not generally subject to allergic reactions, granulomas, or cysts. And if you don’t like the results of your treatment, Juvederm can be dissolved by a different injectable product cal vitrase.
Juvederm Ultra XC is an injectable filler that is part of a family of hyaluronic acid injectable fillers made by Allergan. Other hyaluronic acid fillers made by Allergan include Voluma, Volbella, Vollure, and Belotero. Allergan also makes Botox. Juvederm is the original product made by Allergan and remains their best selling injectable filler mainly because it is extremely versatile and because it has a low complication profile. It is a soft gel that is perfect for areas like the lips, the under-eye hollows and the nasolabial fold. It dissolves over a period of 9 months. Juvederm was one of the first fillers to be used for cosmetic rejuvenation.
It lasts for about 1 year. Voluma was another hyaluronic acid filler released and lasts for 2 years. Hyaluronic acid fillers are attractive to novice patients and non-expert injectors because of their ease of use. They come as a soft gel that is also dissolvable if lord forbid you don’t like the result. How long does Juvederm Last?
Juvederm will last about 9 months to a year depending upon the movement of the area. It is more stable in areas that don’t move as much such as in the cheek mound. It will dissolve quicker in areas that move a lot such as in the nasolabial folds and the marionette lines. Stacking treatments after 6 months appear to allow Juvederm to last up to 2 years.
What areas are most commonly treated with Juvederm?
Juvederm is a very soft injectable gel that has a consistency very similar to the lips. But because of its very low complication profile, Juvederm is used in almost every area of the face. Common treatment areas include the under-eye hollows, the cheeks, the temples, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines.
How much Juvederm will I need?
The amount of Juvederm needed will depend on your individual features. As a rule of thumb, most patients will benefit from at least 2-3 syringes of filler. Each under-eye hollow will benefit from a syringe. The lips will often benefit from at least one syringe.
What are some of the other Hyaluronic Acid Fillers? ( HAs )
Hyaluronic acid fillers make up the largest family of fillers used in facial rejuvenation. The most common used hyaluronic acid fillers are Juvederm, Voluma, and Restylane. But their parent companies ( Allergan and Merz ) are continually creating new products that can be used for more specific indications.
- Juvéderm Vollure and XC fill medium or deep wrinkles and lines throughout the face, like nasolabial folds and other lines around the nose and mouth. The results on average are visible for about a year.
- Juvéderm Volbella and Ultra XC add shape to the lower lip, upper lip, or the entire mouth while also correcting the look of fine, vertical lines in the lips. The improvements usually can be seen for up to a year.
- Juvéderm Voluma augments the contour of the cheeks to treat volume loss in the mid-face.
Candidates for Facial Fillers have the following complaints:
- Treat under-eye hollows
- Camouflage under-eye bags
- Provide youthful fullness the temples
- Provide youthful fullness the the cheek bones
- Reduce the appearance of the nasolabial fold and the marionette lines
- Augment the lips
- Augment the chin
- Provide a nonsurgical rhinoplasty - add height to the nose, fill deformities
- Fill acne scars
The best candidates for Juvéderm injectable treatments are adults who have lines and wrinkles on their face that they would like to fix. It may also be beneficial if you have age-related volume loss or naturally thin lips and/or cheeks. Juvéderm wrinkle filler injections at Aesthetica Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center are ideal if you would like to rejuvenate your appearance while avoiding the expense and recovery of cosmetic surgery (like eyelid lifts, brow lifts, facelifts, or facial implants).
"It's been over a year and a half since I've been going to Dr. Chang's office, I drive an hour just to get here (although I know some drive three hours or more to see him!). I did a lot of research to find a board certified plastic surgeon in the area with a solid and reputable background.Throughout my visits, he's been incredibly kind and taken the time to listen to my never ending list of questions. There are a lot of doctors that push services that you don't need just for money but he'll be transparent to tell you exactly what he feels you'll need in order to gain improvement and will work with you to see what could be the best outcome. You can also text or email him directly after any invasive procedures if you have any questions/concerns instead of waiting for a follow up. I also don't want to forget the rest of the staff - everyone from the receptionists and nurses have been very gracious, patient and accommodating to my needs but I also want to mention Melanie whose an RN at Dr. Chang's office. She has superb bed side skills and truly makes you feel at ease when you're speaking with her. I've probably annoyed her with a million questions and emails but she's still been stellar. I highly recommend her for any non-surgical procedures. They have a few videos on their website and youtube as well so you have an idea of who they are and the procedures they perform if you want to get a better idea yourself but I definitely recommend them, they're awesome."- M. / Google / Jul 24, 2018

How is a Juvederm injection procedure performed?
Filler treatments can be a lunchtime procedure that can be performed in a matter of minutes. Juvederm is a gel-like substance that will need to be injected. Most patients describe the sensation as either painless or as a quick pinch.
- Step 1 - Consultation about the potential benefits of volume replacement for you
- Step 2- Detail where you will benefit from volume replacement and supplementation
- Step 3- Choose the appropriate filler based on the area, duration of action, and complication profile
- Step 4- Choose the volume required to provide maximum benefit
- Step 6 - Inject the fillers based on your needs
- Step 7 - Apply ice
- Step 8 - Immediate return to work
Juvéderm treatments commonly only last around 15 – 30 minutes, based on which areas are being corrected. Your skin will be cleaned, then the injection sites will be selected. To reduce discomfort throughout the process, Juvéderm dermal fillers contain a local anesthetic. Following your procedure, you are allowed to go back to your daily routine; however, strenuous activity including exercise should be skipped for at least a day. You need to be cautious to not put your hands on your face immediately after your treatment to prevent massaging the gel into other areas.
What to Expect
Expect minor swelling that should not draw attention unless there more than 4 syringes of filler are used. Most patients can return to work immediately. Minor swelling can be expected for up to 2-4 weeks. Lips swell more than any other area.
What are the risks and complications of Juvederm ?
All injectable fillers have the potential to be lumpy or irregular
All injections have the potential for bruising or swelling.
In VERY rare cases, the filler can put pressure on a blood vessel or a nerve.
Cosmetic improvement is subjective. If you don’t like your result, a reversing agent called Hyaluronidase can be used to dissolve the Juvederm. Refunds will not be given.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Juvéderm cost?
The price of Juvéderm will vary based on how much filler is necessary for the treatment area. The more filler that is used, the higher the cost of the treatment. Prior to your injection treatment, a customized treatment plan will be created to fit your aesthetic goals and budget.
Will the treatment be painful?
Though most patients do not find it necessary, a local anesthetic can be applied to the treatment area prior to injection if you are worried about any pain. Following treatment, you may experience some slight swelling and bruising that will usually subside within a week depending on the treatment area. You should contact our office if you experience any significant pain or abnormal side effects after your Juvéderm treatment.
What are some of the other Fillers that can build up collagen?
More expert injectors might introduce you to other fillers that are not made from Hyaluronic Acid. These include Radiesse, Sculptra, and Bellafill. These products tend to last longer than the hyaluronic acids because they build up your own collagen. They also have the potential for more problems. Although rare, these products have a higher potential for developing small cysts and granulomas than their hyaluronic acid cousins. In addition, they do not have an antidote that can dissolve the product if you don’t like the results. The benefit to these collagen building fillers is that they tend to be more cost effective as they last longer and usually come in larger volumes per syringe than their HA counterparts.
Can you use different fillers at the same time?
Many patients will use the strategy of using different fillers for different goals. For example, patients who want a complete facial rejuvenation ( sometimes called a liquid facelift ) will have longer acting fillers like Sculptra placed in areas that need larger volumes but don’t tend to have as many problems; and softer and safer products like Juvederm or another HA in more sensitive areas like the under-eye hollows or the lips.
What is Voluma
Voluma is the second most commonly used hyaluronic acid filler. It is a soft gel but not quite as soft as Juvederm Ultra. Voluma will last about 2 years. Voluma is ideal for volume replacement where volume has the potential for lifting and sculpting tissue. This is true in the cheeks, temples, and jowls. It is also my favorite material for the non-surgical nose job procedure:
- Lasts 1.5-2 years
- Favorite material for adding bulk for lifting and sculpting tissue
- Favorite injection sites include the under-eye hollows, the cheek, the temples, the lip philtrum, and the chin.
- Favorite material for the non-surgical nose job
What is Juvederm Ultra XC
Juvederm Ultra XC is the original hyaluronic acid injectable filler. It is an extremely soft gel that is ideal for lip augmentation. Juvederm will last about 1 year after the treatment and potentially 2 years after the second treatment. Because of the soft and forgiving nature of the filler, Juvederm can be used for any area of the face and is often the material used if a patient has never used a filler before.
- Lasts 9 months to a year
- Favorite filler option for lip augmentation
- Favorite filler for under-eye hollows
- Favorite filler along with Voluma for nasolabial folds and marionette lines
What is Vobella
Volbella is a newer injectable hyaluronic acid filler. It is a soft injectable gel that is thin enough to help correct the lip lines. We only use Volbella after using Juvederm to plump up the pink upper lip and Voluma to plump up the upper lip philtrum. If there are still persistent lines, then Volbella is a great option.
- Lasts 9 months to a year
- Favorite material for upper lip lines after adding lip volume with Juvederm and Voluma
What is Belotero
Belotero is a newer injectable hyaluronic acid filler. It is the thinnest of the HA fillers. It is a soft injectable gel that is thin enough to help correct the lip lines. We only use Belotero after using Juvederm to plump up the pink upper lip and Voluma to plump up the upper lip philtrum. If there are still persistent lines, then Belotero is a great option.
- Belotero factoids:
- Lasts 9 months to a year
- Favorite material for upper lip lines after adding lip volume with Juvederm and Voluma
- Favorite material for superficial lines and the tear troughs
What is Sculptra
Sculptra is an excellent injectable filler that is made from poly-L-lactic acid (or PLLA) which is a synthetic form of lactic acid. It is ideal for large surface areas where you want a longer lasting filler option. Ideal areas include the cheeks, the temple, and the chin. Patients who have lost a lot of weight or who have a gaunt appearance are ideal candidates for using Sculptra. Aside from using your own fat, Sculptra is the most cost effective filler provided that you are a good candidate.
- It is the longest lasting filler lasting 2-3 years
- You get more volume per syringe than the HA fillers and is therefore more cost effective
- Sculptra stimulates the body to produce your own collagen which provides even more volume.
- Sculptra should not be used in the lips or too close to the eye
What is Radiesse
Radiesse is an injectable filler made from calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in an aqueous gel carrier. Unlike the hyaluronic acid fillers, Radiesse works by stimulating the body to produce its own collagen in addition to providing immediate volume for up to 2 years.
Radiesse is an excellent material for adding localized volume and used for deeper lines and wrinkles to the upper face. Also excellent to use in aging hands.
- Lasts 1-2 years
- Should not be placed in lips
- Interchangeable with Voluma for most indications
- Excellent for adding isolated bulk such as on the cheek bone or for rejuvenating the back of the hands
What is Restylane
Restylane was one of the original HA products. It is very similar to Juvederm. We use Juvederm instead of Restylane in our practice
How do injectable fillers slow facial aging?
Injectable fillers slow facial aging by restoring volume to loose and sagging tissue. Think about a balloon, as the balloon is deflated, it becomes floppy; but as you refill and restore volume to the balloon, the skin becomes tense and full. Because the tissue is no longer loose, sagging, and mobile, the collagen does not break down as quickly. Tissue does not stretch or fall as quickly.
What areas can be treated with injectable fillers?
- Lower eyelid between the eyelid and cheek
- Lower cheek
- Marionette area below the corners of the lip
What are the side effects of injectable fillers?
All injectable fillers have the potential to be lumpy or irregular. Any time there are injections happening there is a potential for bruising or swelling. Normally filler and botox injections have very minimal downtime. In VERY rare cases filler can put pressure on a blood vessel which is why our office prefers the Hyaluronic acid based fillers that CAN be reversed if necessary, but again it is very uncommon.
What is the Comprehensive Facial Rejuvenation Plan?
A comprehensive facial rejuvenation plan takes into account and targets the 3 components of aging. These include:
- Loss of facial volume
- Loss of collagen and sagging of the skin
- Visible changes in the skin including texture, pigmentation, fine lines, and wrinkles
During your consultation, we can make a plan to address some or all of these components to provide you with the best plan to look and feel younger. Facial volume can be restored with facial fillers or a fat transfer
Loss of collagen and sagging of the skin can be addressed by redraping the skin with surgery if necessary
Visible changes of the skin can be addressed by skin care lasers, PRP skin rejuvenation
How long do fillers last?
How long your filler treatment will last will depend upon the product used, the area of treatment, and your metabolism. Generally speaking, most of the popular fillers will last between one and two years.
- Juvederm - 9 months to 1 year
- Voluma - 2 years
- Vollure - 1.5-2 years
- Volbella- 9 months to 1 year
- Radiesse - 1 year
- Sculptra - 2-3 years
- Bellafill - 5 years
What is the best injectable filler for underneath my eyes and cheek?
The best injectables for underneath the eyes are the ones that are safest and the softest. These include the hyaluronic gels Juvederm and Voluma. Both of these are soft and tissue-like for the the skin in the area but can also be dissolved if you don’t like the results. I also like Radiesse if it is used more laterally to the side as it is moldable and actually builds up collagen. Juvederm will last about 8-12 months while Voluma and Radiesse might last up to 2 years. Fat transfer with or without PRP stem cells is my favorite as it directly replaces the lost fat but this requires the need for more recovery time.
What is the best injectable filler for my lips?
The best injectable filler for the lips are the ones that are safest and the softest. The most common injectable filler for the lips is Juvederm as it is extremely soft and safe. And if you don’t like the results, it is dissolvable. I also like Voluma as it is also extremely safe and soft. It lasts almost twice as long as Juvederm but needs to be performed by a plastic surgeon as it takes greater expertise. It is particularly good when it is placed above the pink lip into the philtrum as this causes the lip to delicately turn up and shorten while reducing the vertical lip lines. When targeting the tiny etched little lines above the lip, Volbella is the best option, it gives you the ability to erase lines without changing the lip shape at all or adding any unwanted volume.
What is the best injectable filler for the fine lines around my cheeks?
The fine lines around the cheeks are caused by multiple factors. These include loss of volume, sun damage, and loss of collage. These are particularly difficult to treat as proper treatment requires approaching the area with comprehensive rejuvenation plan; that is replace volume, redrape sagging tissue, repair surface skin issues, and treat hyperdynamic muscles. Nonsurgical approach includes replacing the volume with injectable fillers and repairing surface skin issues with lasers. Any of the fillers can be used, but Sculptra or Fat transfer with or without PRP stem cells are the most dramatic and cost effective over time especially when combined with the Triple Skin Care Laser System ( Forever Young will restore collagen and reduce the brown sun and age discolorations, the Micro Laser Peel will directly remove UV damage and smooth out fine lines and textural problems, while the Profractional Laser will tighten tissue, reduce fine lines, and induce more collagen ) If the lines are worse and contract with squinting Botox can also be used to soften these lines.
What is the best injectable filler for my temples?
Any of the fillers including Juvederm and Voluma can be used, but Sculptra or Fat transfer with or without PRP stem cells are the most dramatic and cost effective over time. Placement in the temple must be performed with a skilled injector as placement needs to be placed under the temporalis fascia to avoid lumps and next to the orbital bones to help elevated the brows and improve the cosmetics of the lower eyelid.
What is the benefit of using fat transfer instead of injectable fillers?
Fat transfer with or without PRP stem cell augmentation is the most natural way to provide or replace volume in the face. The procedure is performed by first taking fat cells from your abdomen, waist, or thighs; then processing the fat so we have only fat tissue, and then injecting it into the face wherever it is needed. The most important benefit is that it provides your own natural tissue. You are providing volume replacement with your own tissue. The tissue is soft and it is living. This is why it is usually difficult to answer the question about how long it will last. Because it is living tissue, it theoretically lasts forever. The problem lies more in the fact that we all lose more fat volume in the face with time and aging. The second benefit is that it is ultimately less expensive over time because you are not paying the overhead of injectable fillers. We do not have to pay a medical device company half of the syringe fee as you are providing your own fillers. Finally, you have unlimited supply.
What is the benefit of using injectables instead of fat?
The major benefit of using injectable fillers is convenience. Injecting fillers takes about 5-10 minutes after we already know you. The product is directly taken off the shelf. And for the most part, there is no significant recovery time beyond some minor swelling and rare but potential bruising. Most patients return to work the same day or the next day. Fat transfer takes at least one week to return to work because of swelling and bruising. The hyaluronic acid fillers Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane, Perlane, Belotero, and Bellafill can be dissolved if you don’t like the result. This is not true of fat. Finally, injectable fillers can be placed with more precision. This is particularly important around the lips. One strategy for lip augmentation includes performing a fat transfer for more lasting bulk but adding Juvederm along the outlines of the lip for precision.
What is PRP stem cell augmentation and why would I want to add it to my Fat Transfer procedure?
PRP stem cell augmentation takes concentrated growth factors that we process from your own blood to inject it with the fat transfer to improve the percent of fat that survives the transfer. The Plasma rich protein ( PRP ) also stimulate the existing fat cells to rejuvenate and multiply irrespective of the fat transfer. PRP is also used to heal problem wounds, help repair problem tendon and orthopedic injuries, and help hair grow without hair transplantation.
What is a non-surgical nose job?
The non-surgical nose job uses fillers like Juvederm or Voluma to reshape the nose. This is most commonly indicated for adding extra height to a flat nasal profile, adding more tip projection, or evening out contour irregularities.
What are injectable fillers?
Injectable fillers like Juvederm are a group of products that instantly restore the facial volume that is depleted with age. There are many types of facial fillers. The most commonly used fillers are made from a natural body product called Hyaluronic Acid (HA). This family of products include popular fillers like Juvederm, Voluma, and Restylane. There are also other products with the potential to build collagen such as Sculptra, Radiesse, and Bellafill. Collectively, these products are used to restore the facial volume that is lost during the aging process.
How long does Juvederm last?
Juvederm is indicated to last up to a year. In our office we use Juvederm Ultra Plus XC which is indicated for over one year depending on the volume injected into the area. Highly mobile areas such as the nasolabial folds and lips tend to break down the product faster
How long does Voluma last?
Voluma typically last between 18 to 24 months depending on the volume injected into the area. Highly mobile areas such as the nasolabial fold tend to break down the product faster
What is the longest lasting filler?
The longest lasting filler that we use is Sculptra. It lasts between 2-3 years depending on the volume injected into the area. Fat transfer can last 5 to 10 years but requires the need for recovery time.
How are injectable fillers different than botox?
Injectable fillers and botox are very different and have different goals. Injectable fillers are used to restore volume.
One of the first signs aging is a predictable loss of facial volume in areas including the temple, the under-eye hollows, the nasolabial fold, the lips, and the marionette area below the corners of the lip. Injectable fillers can be used to restore volume to these areas to give a more youthful plumpness to the affected areas. And like a deflated balloon, restoring the volume also fills out the loose skin to give the non-surgical equivalent of a facelift.
Botox, on the other hand, does not restore volume. It’s purpose is to treat hyperdynamic muscles. The most commonly treated muscles are the horizontal forehead lines, the vertical glabellar lines between the brows, and the crows feet lines. Other areas include uplifting the corners of the mouth, the neck bands, and the dimpling of the chin.
How can I prevent bruising
There is always a chance for bruising when you have an injection. The vast majority of patients for these injectables don’t have bruising. Avoiding blood thinning agents such as Advil, Aspirin, and Alcohol the days before your procedure can help minimize this from happening. If you do have some bruising, introducing Arnica Montana and eating pineapple can help make bruising go away faster.
What is the difference between a dermal filler and a muscle relaxer?
There is a great difference between dermal fillers and muscle relaxers such as BOTOX. Where BOTOX works to relax wrinkles and help prevent future wrinkles, Juvéderm helps to add volume to the face. Juvéderm is ideal for filling in deep-set wrinkles including smile lines, and it is also beneficial for creating fuller lips.
What results can I expect?
It may take a few days to see the full results of your Juvéderm treatment. Typically, it only takes one treatment session to achieve your desired outcome. However, you can schedule a follow-up appointment if you would like to add more volume than received with your initial treatment.
How long do results typically last?
The effects of one Juvéderm treatment can last anywhere from 4 – 6 months. This may vary based on the area in which the filler was injected. The longevity of results can also depend on how the patient’s body breaks down the filler over time.
